Thailand’s Immigration Bureau has introduced a mobile application that digitises arrival registration and stores foreign traveller profiles for future border crossings. The software is called THIM. Available on Apple and Android platforms, the system allows British nationals to complete their arrival cards digitally before landing in the country.
Border Entry Changes
Under the new process, users scan their passport once using the app. The software reads the biographical page and embedded chip to create a permanent profile, removing the need to fill out paper forms or generate a new QR code for every trip. Subsequent entries require only minor updates. Officials state this reduces arrival processing times to under three minutes, with border staff instantly viewing the completed digital registration at the desk. All personal data remains on servers located within Thailand to comply with local privacy laws.
Future Expat Services
The bureau plans to expand the application into a broader service platform for foreign residents. Future updates are scheduled to include appointment booking, electronic certification documents, and online applications for visa extensions. This could significantly reduce in-person immigration visits. Authorities have also indicated that the mandatory 90-day address reporting requirement for long-term visa holders may eventually be integrated into the software. The app currently supports English alongside three other languages.
Automated Gate Access
Immigration officials are working to expand automated border channel clearance. This technology allows eligible travellers to pass through passport-scanning gates without speaking to a border officer, a service presently restricted to Thai citizens and select Asian passport holders. Access for other nationalities will be phased in progressively. The exact timeline for British passport holders to use these automated gates remains unconfirmed.
