A strong south-west monsoon is currently sweeping across the region. Bangkok faces a 60 to 70 per cent chance of daily thunderstorms.
Travel delays
Heavy rainfall will cause significant disruption across the city. Localised waterlogging frequently leads to severe traffic congestion during these monsoon events, particularly in lower-lying districts where municipal drainage systems struggle to cope with the sudden deluge. Commuting times will increase. Expatriates travelling to work or transporting children to international schools are advised to allow substantial extra travel time and monitor official traffic announcements closely before departing.
Coastal and regional risks
The weather system extends far beyond the capital. A low-pressure cell stretching towards Vietnam means central and northern regions will also experience prolonged downpours over the coming week, complicating travel plans. British nationals residing on the western side of the South face the highest risk of severe weather. This includes coastal areas near the Andaman Sea. Authorities advise those in flood-prone communities near waterways to remain alert for rapidly changing conditions.
Safety measures
Lightning and high winds pose additional hazards. The local administration warns residents to avoid open spaces and keep clear of large trees, which frequently drop branches during squalls. Unstable advertising structures also present a physical danger to pedestrians. British residents should avoid carrying metal umbrellas or other conductive objects outdoors during electrical storms.
