Thailand 2026 Rainy Season Health Directive

Thailand has issued a nationwide health directive for the 2026 rainy season. British expatriates are advised to take preventative measures against respiratory infections, mosquito-borne diseases and environmental hazards.

Health

Thailand’s Department of Disease Control has issued a nationwide health directive for the 2026 rainy season. The period runs from mid-May until mid-October. Humid conditions and frequent flooding significantly increase the transmission risk of several communicable diseases across the country. British expatriates should monitor four specific categories of health hazards.

Respiratory and Contact Infections

Respiratory illnesses such as influenza, pneumonia, RSV, and Covid-19 spread rapidly in damp environments. Masks remain advisable in crowded places. Furthermore, heavy rainfall frequently causes localised flooding that spreads contact-transmitted bacterial infections, including leptospirosis and melioidosis, through contaminated soil and water. Expats navigating flooded streets should wear protective boots. Immediate showering is necessary after any contact with floodwater. Hand, foot, and mouth disease also peaks during this period among young children in international schools and nurseries.

Mosquito-Borne Diseases

Stagnant water creates ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes. This triggers a sharp seasonal rise in dengue fever, chikungunya, and Zika virus across the country. Residents must routinely empty outdoor water containers to eliminate breeding sites. Preventative measures include using insect repellent and installing window nets. Anyone developing severe joint pain or high fever should seek a doctor immediately.

Environmental Hazards

The persistent rain forces venomous snakes out of their natural habitats and into residential gardens. Expats should clear overgrown vegetation around their homes. Thunderstorms also bring a high risk of lightning strikes. People caught outside must avoid sheltering under large trees, while those indoors should unplug electronics to prevent power surge damage. Furthermore, officials advise strictly against foraging for wild mushrooms. Lethal varieties grow rapidly in damp conditions. The Thai government has deployed mobile rapid response teams across the provinces to monitor regional outbreaks. Expats requiring medical guidance can contact the disease control hotline on 1422.
