Tourism

Thailand is enhancing its railway tourism offerings, integrating local products and food inspired by a Japanese community-based model. This initiative, developed through collaboration with Japan, aims to strengthen the country's rail network and support local economies. For British expats, this signals a shift in domestic travel experiences and increased opportunities to engage with regional Thai culture.

Thailand boosts railway tourism

Enhanced Rail Travel

The Department of Rail Transport (DRT) recently discussed plans to adapt successful Japanese railway tourism practices. This includes developing local food products, similar to Japan’s railway lunch boxes, and allowing communities to sell OTOP products directly on tourism trains. These changes mean British residents in Thailand may find more varied and convenient options for exploring the country by rail, with improved onboard services. Recent additions to the network include the SRT Royal Blossom, a luxury service operating day trips between Bangkok and Pa Sak Jolasid Dam. Other refurbished Japanese trains now connect Bangkok with destinations such as Phetchaburi, Lop Buri, and Nakhon Ratchasima, offering upgraded facilities for passenger comfort.

Supporting Local Communities

The focus on community-based tourism directly supports local economies along railway routes. OTOP, or One Tambon One Product, encourages local entrepreneurs to develop goods using regional resources. By featuring these products on trains, the initiative provides direct access for travellers, including expats, to support small businesses and experience regional specialities. This approach promotes local culture and creates additional income streams for communities, potentially fostering deeper connections between foreign residents and the areas they visit.

Travel Considerations

Officials are also working to increase weekday travel demand. This strategy aims to reduce weekend overcrowding and generate more consistent revenue for operators. For expats, this could translate to less crowded journeys during the week, offering a more relaxed travel experience away from peak tourist times. The availability of both modernised and traditional heritage trains provides choice, catering to different preferences for comfort and travel style.
