Thailand's Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued warnings for heavy rainfall and rough seas across parts of the country, effective July 1. This weather pattern, driven by a strong southwest monsoon, brings a risk of significant disruption for British residents and visitors.
National Weather Overview
Heavy rain is forecast for much of Thailand on July 1, with very heavy downpours expected in eastern and western southern regions. The TMD advises residents to prepare for potential flash floods and water run-off, particularly in areas near hills or rivers. The forecast period covers 6am on July 1 to 6am on July 2.
Coastal Travel Advisory
Sea conditions are expected to be rough, particularly in the upper Andaman Sea. Waves there could reach 2-3 metres, potentially exceeding 3 metres during thunderstorms. In the lower Andaman Sea and upper Gulf, waves are forecast at around 2 metres, rising higher in stormy conditions. Boat travel requires caution. Small craft in the upper Andaman Sea must remain ashore. This impacts island transfers and marine activities for expats.
Regional Impact for Expats
In Bangkok and surrounding provinces, thunderstorms are forecast for over 70% of the area. This may lead to localised flooding and travel delays.
Southern Thailand, particularly the west coast regions popular with expats, including Phuket, Phang Nga, and Krabi, faces widespread thunderstorms and heavy to very heavy rain. Waves off Phuket northwards are expected at 2-3 metres, increasing above 3 metres in storms. This affects coastal transport and leisure activities significantly.
The Eastern region, encompassing areas like Chon Buri (Pattaya) and Rayong, can expect thunderstorms over 70% of its area, with heavy to very heavy rain. This could disrupt local travel and outdoor plans.
In the North, including Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, 70% of the area is forecast for thunderstorms, with heavy rain in some locations. This may affect road travel in mountainous areas.
