Koh Talu is a small island off Bang Saphan Noi in southern Prachuap Khiri Khan Province. Its name refers to the opening eroded through the rock at its northern end, while its beaches, coral areas and single island resort make it a focused destination for snorkelling, kayaking, walking and organised marine-conservation activities.

Visits work differently from a conventional Thai island stay. Koh Talu has no village, public ferry network or independent collection of hotels and restaurants. Day trips and overnight packages are arranged through Koh Talu Island Resort, using the operator's private mainland pier. This makes advance planning important, but also puts transfers, meals and many activities into one booking.

Island Character and Coastal Layout

Koh Talu lies in the Gulf of Thailand, close enough to the Prachuap Khiri Khan mainland for the resort's speedboat crossing to take about 20 minutes in suitable conditions. The island is elongated from north to south, with forested slopes, rocky headlands and sandy bays. Ao Yai is the main beach and clubhouse area, while Ao Muk has its own beach, accommodation and activity base.

The island's best-known landform is the rock opening at its northern end. It can be seen from the sea, while a separate walking route leads to Chong Talu Noi Viewpoint. The resort describes Koh Talu as a private island with one resort and no resident village, so the accommodation areas, paths, jetties and clubhouses form the practical centre of a stay.

Walking is the normal way to move between nearby facilities. There are no taxis or public local transport after arrival. Terrain changes quickly away from the beach, and viewpoint walks include uneven, steep ground. The compact layout is an advantage for exploring on foot, although anyone with limited mobility should ask the resort about boat boarding, steps, paths and the location of their room before booking.

The Rock Opening and Turtle Conservation

The natural opening in the northern rock is the feature behind the island's name and a recurring landmark on boat trips around Koh Talu. Access and visibility depend on sea conditions, so it should be treated as part of the day's planned route rather than a guaranteed independent kayak excursion.

Koh Talu also has a Sea Turtle Conservation Centre run under the Siam Marine Rehabilitation Foundation. The resort says turtles come ashore to lay eggs and that the centre protects eggs, cares for hatchlings and prepares young turtles for release. Its public programme has included learning sessions and supervised conservation tasks, although special events and turtle releases are scheduled activities rather than something every visitor can expect.

This distinction matters when planning a trip around the conservation work. Guests may be able to learn about the centre and see turtles in its care, but releases depend on the animals being ready and on the foundation's programme. Ask what is running during your dates, follow staff instructions and avoid handling wildlife unless the conservation team specifically supervises it.

Meals and Island Dining

Meals are organised through the resort rather than chosen from independent island restaurants. Overnight packages include the stated number of meals, while the day-trip programme includes lunch. Food is served at the Ao Yai and Ao Muk clubhouses according to the day's schedule.

The resort describes its cooking as based on local ingredients, including fish, prawns, crab and squid sourced through the nearby fishing area. Expect shared Thai meals and seafood to be more central than a large à la carte selection. Tea, coffee, fruit juice and other refreshments are included in the current overnight package description, while extra snacks and drinks can be bought at the clubhouse.

Dietary requirements should be given when booking, not after reaching the island. There is no alternative restaurant district to fall back on, and menus can reflect deliveries, the catch and the number of guests. Confirm whether a package covers every meal from arrival to departure, particularly when choosing different morning or afternoon boat times.

Accommodation and Current Package Prices

Koh Talu Island Resort is the island's only accommodation operator. Its current room areas and categories include Beach Chalets at Ao Muk, Manila Deluxe Chalets at Ao Yai and Thai Style Ocean Villas beside Ao Yai Beach. The categories differ in setting, construction and capacity, so choose by room location and access as well as price.

The resort currently sells accommodation as per-person packages based on two sharing. The published price includes the scheduled return speedboat, accommodation, meals, tea, coffee and fruit juice, plus scheduled activities such as snorkelling, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, trekking and evening sea-raft fishing when conditions permit. A 30% single-occupancy supplement and 7% VAT apply, and long weekends carry a further 500 THB (approximately £11) per person.

These are per-person prices based on two sharing, before 7% VAT and any applicable supplements. Confirm the current total, room allocation, cancellation terms and included activities before payment.

Snorkelling, Kayaking and Viewpoint Walks

Snorkelling is the central water activity. The resort's morning programme normally uses two or three sites over roughly two to three hours, with the final choice governed by weather and sea conditions. Some bays also allow entry from the beach. Coral, fish and underwater visibility vary naturally, and visitors should follow the crew's instructions about safe entry points and areas temporarily unsuitable for use.

Kayaks and stand-up paddleboards are available around the Ao Yai and Ao Muk clubhouses, subject to equipment and conditions. They are included for package guests under the current programme rather than priced as hourly rentals. Sailing is listed for guests staying two nights and requires advance reservation.

The land programme includes early and afternoon viewpoint walks. The resort lists an early hike of about 20–30 minutes and a longer afternoon outing to Chong Talu Noi Viewpoint, taking around 90 minutes to two hours for the complete activity. Wear footwear with grip, carry water and judge the heat and terrain realistically. The day's leader may alter or cancel a route when rain, wind or path conditions make it unsuitable.

Evening activities may include squid fishing from the sea raft. All marine and walking activities are subject to weather, equipment and the resort schedule; the operator states that missed activities are not exchanged or refunded.

Getting to the Mainland Pier

Koh Talu Island Resort's front office and private pier are in Bang Saphan Noi district. This is the transfer point to use for route planning; Bang Saphan and Bang Saphan Yai are separate mainland names that may also appear in rail and road searches.

The resort estimates driving from Bangkok to its pier at about five to six hours, while its listed public-bus journey from Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal takes about six to seven hours. It also gives a typical rail journey of five and a half to six hours from Bangkok to Bang Saphan station, followed by its pier shuttle at 200 THB (approximately £4.50). Rail times and fares depend on the service, so check the State Railway of Thailand timetable and arrange the final transfer with the resort.

The current resort schedule shows two speedboat movements in each direction each day, with a crossing of about 20 minutes. Its package page lists morning and afternoon departures, but two parts of the same page differ by 30 minutes on the outward times. Treat the booking confirmation as authoritative and arrive at the private pier at the time the resort specifies. Boat times can also change with weather and operational needs.

On Koh Talu, guests continue on foot between the landing point, room and clubhouse, with boats or watercraft used for organised sea activities. Pack so that you can carry essential belongings over a beach or jetty transfer.

Planning a Realistic Budget

The resort's inclusive model combines most island costs into one package. A day visitor currently starts at 1,700 THB (approximately £38) before any mainland transport and personal purchases. For an overnight visitor sharing a Beach Chalet, the starting package is 4,200 THB (approximately £94) per person, plus 7% VAT; higher room categories, single occupancy and long-weekend supplements increase the total.

Allow separately for travel to Bang Saphan Noi, optional drinks or snacks, personal equipment and travel insurance. Bring a payment method agreed with the resort and enough Thai baht for modest incidentals, but do not carry large amounts of cash unnecessarily.

Choosing Between a Day Trip and Overnight Stay

A day trip gives access to the island, lunch and a structured set of activities without committing to a resort stay. It is the practical choice when Koh Talu is one part of a longer mainland itinerary, although the usable time and exact activities depend on the boat schedule and conditions.

An overnight package creates more time for the beach, evening programme and viewpoint walks. Two nights add greater flexibility and may include sailing when reserved in advance. The island particularly suits travellers content with organised meals and activities in one self-contained setting. Those wanting independent restaurants, local transport, nightlife or a choice of accommodation should base themselves on the mainland and visit for the day.

Sea Conditions, Electricity and Essential Services

Koh Talu's seasonal pattern is not the same as the Andaman coast. The resort describes the calmer period as typically running from mid-January to October, with its monsoon period from November into January. Conditions still vary day by day throughout the year. Check the marine forecast and the operator's advice shortly before travel, especially if your plans depend on snorkelling or a particular boat time.

Electricity comes from generators. The resort says power is normally switched off from 09:00 to 11:00 and from 14:00 to 17:00, while air conditioning is available when the generators are running. Mobile coverage from the major Thai networks and resort Wi-Fi are available, but neither should be treated as guaranteed for urgent work.

The clubhouses sell essential items, snacks and drinks. For medicines, specialist toiletries and other necessities, shop on the mainland before reaching the pier. Travellers with medical needs should ask about emergency arrangements and keep required medication with them during the crossing.

Buy medicines, sun protection and personal essentials before travelling to the private pier. Island shopping is limited to basic items at the resort clubhouses.

Boat Times

Use the time on your booking confirmation. Published schedules can change, and the operator's current website contains slightly different morning departure times in separate sections.

Water Activities

Wear a buoyancy aid when instructed, keep clear of coral and do not stand on the reef. Let the activity team know if you are not a confident swimmer.

Walking Equipment

Bring secure footwear rather than relying only on loose beach sandals. The viewpoint routes involve slopes and can become slippery after rain.

Wildlife Activities

Observe turtles and other wildlife under staff supervision. A turtle release is a managed conservation event, not an activity that can be booked on demand.

Power Planning

Charge phones, cameras and medical equipment before the scheduled generator breaks. A power bank is useful, provided it complies with your airline's baggage rules.
