Spanning 969 square kilometres along the Tenasserim Hills, Kui Buri National Park is widely regarded as the premier destination for observing wild Asian elephants and gaur (Indian bison) in their natural habitat. Unlike captive camps or walk-in sanctuaries elsewhere in the country, the animals here live untamed across mixed deciduous forest and open grasslands. Visitors typically spend between three and four hours at the site, arriving in the afternoon when animals move away from the dense canopy towards watering holes and open clearings.

The Open Safari Circuit forms the core of any visit. Private vehicles cannot enter the wildlife zone; instead, you travel in open-backed four-wheel-drive pickup trucks operated by local village conservation drivers. These vehicles navigate rough gravel tracks, pausing near known gathering grounds while rangers track recent herd movements via radio.

Gaur Viewing Clearings provide vantage points across large pastures. Small groups of gaur—the largest wild cattle species in the world—regularly feed alongside wild boar, golden jackals, and barking deer.

Waterholes and Salt Licks, created through conservation initiatives, serve as the primary spots for elephant sightings. Between 15:30 and 17:30, family herds including young calves emerge from the tree line to drink, bathe in mud, and feed on tall grasses, often lingering within 30 to 50 metres of stationary visitor vehicles.

Getting There and Logistics

Kui Buri National Park is located in Kui Buri District, roughly 85 kilometres south of Hua Hin and 60 kilometres north of Prachuap Khiri Khan town. No direct public transport serves the Huai Luek ranger entrance. Most UK travellers either rent a car or arrange a private return taxi from Hua Hin, which typically costs between 1,800 THB and 2,500 THB (£41 to £58) including the driver waiting time.

The wildlife viewing area opens daily from 14:00 to 18:00, with final vehicle entry permitted at 17:00. Arriving between 14:30 and 15:00 gives you the optimal window before the animals emerge. Foreign visitor admission is 200 THB (£4.60) for adults and 100 THB (£2.30) for children aged 3 to 14. In addition, you must hire an open-top safari truck with a local driver-guide at the visitor desk for a flat fee of 850 THB (£19.60) per vehicle (seating up to six passengers).
