Stretching for 2.7 kilometres along the city's western coastline on the Gulf of Thailand, Pattaya Beach is the central coastal focal point of Pattaya. The gently curving bay runs directly alongside the one-way Beach Road, placing the sea on one side and a continuous strip of seaside cafes, hotels, and multi-storey shopping complexes on the other.

Following an extensive sand replenishment project managed by Thailand's Marine Department to reverse severe coastal erosion, the shoreline was widened to between 35 and 50 metres across its entire length. This restoration reclaimed generous expanses of open sand, creating substantial room for sunbathing, walking, and coastal recreation. Buoyed swimming enclosures are positioned along the water to provide designated bathing areas protected from offshore watercraft.

Daytime activity centres on both the sand and the water. Speedboats, jet skis, and parasailing operators run regular trips across the bay, while licensed vendors patrol the promenade selling fresh fruit, grilled seafood, and cold drinks to beachgoers on rented loungers. The setting works well for travellers who want an active coastal environment paired with immediate access to city amenities, transport, and dining just across the street.

Beach Zones and Layout

Pattaya Beach curves for approximately 2.7 kilometres along the city's western edge, running south from the Dusit Thani headland to the entrance of Walking Street. The shoreline naturally divides into three distinct stretches:

North Pattaya Beach extends from the northern headland down to around Soi 6, near the Dolphin Roundabout. This is the least congested stretch of the bay, buffered from the heaviest nightlife. Lined with mature trees that provide natural shade, the northern end features broader stretches of open sand, fewer motorised craft operating close to the water's edge, and gentler swimming conditions.

Central Pattaya Beach covers the middle section between Soi 7 and Soi 13/2, sitting directly opposite major shopping complexes such as Central Festival Pattaya Beach. This is the liveliest zone on the waterfront. Rows of parasols and sun loungers occupy the sand, while local licensed vendors run water sports directly from the shore. Jet ski rentals generally cost between 800 and 1,500 THB (approximately £18 to £35) for 30 minutes, alongside banana boat rides and parasailing pickups.

South Pattaya Beach extends from Soi 13/3 down to the entrance of Walking Street, adjacent to the access road for Bali Hai Pier. Speedboats regularly anchor in the shallows here to board passengers heading out to Koh Larn. Towards late afternoon, the beachfront cafes and open-air venues along this southern curve draw crowds gathering to watch the sunset across the Gulf of Thailand before the nightlife district opens.

Getting There and Logistics

Pattaya Beach runs alongside Beach Road (Pattaya Sai 1) in Central Pattaya. From Bangkok, direct public coaches depart regularly from the Ekkamai (Eastern) and Mo Chit 2 (Northern) bus terminals, terminating at Pattaya Bus Terminal on North Pattaya Road. Tickets generally cost between 140 and 160 THB (around £3.20 to £3.70), with journeys taking approximately two to two-and-a-half hours depending on traffic.

Getting up and down the coast is straightforward using the local dark blue songthaews (open-air shared pickup trucks known as baht buses). These vehicles follow a continuous one-way loop, travelling south along Beach Road and returning north along Second Road (Pattaya Sai 2). Simply flag one down at the roadside, take a seat on the rear benches, and press an overhead buzzer when approaching your destination. Standard fares along this central loop run from 10 to 15 THB (around £0.23 to £0.35) per person, paid in cash to the driver upon stepping out.

The public beach remains open around the clock, though deckchair and parasol vendors usually pack up between 18:00 and 20:00. Standard canvas chair rentals are officially capped at 50 THB (roughly £1.15) for the day, while padded loungers cost up to 100 THB (£2.30). Beachside vendors, lounger operators, and songthaews operate strictly on cash, so carry small notes. For calmer conditions and less motorised boat traffic, plan swimming sessions for the early morning.
