Nong Nooch Tropical Garden Sattahip: Visitor Guide

Covering roughly 600 acres (2.4 square kilometres) in the Sattahip countryside just south of Pattaya, Nong Nooch Tropical Botanical Garden blends serious plant conservation and botanical research with elaborate display gardens and life-sized dinosaur sculptures.

Originally purchased in 1954 by Pisit and Nongnooch Tansacha as a commercial fruit plantation, the property was redesigned into a conservation and ornamental garden before opening to the public in 1980. The living collection contains more than 12,000 plant species distributed across dozens of themed zones, ranging from formal European parterres and cactus greenhouses to major cycad and palm gene banks. A network of shaded, elevated skywalks spans several kilometres above the floral beds, providing sweeping vantage points across the grounds while keeping visitors off the hot tarmac below.

Because of the sheer size of the grounds, exploring the main attractions generally takes between three and five hours. In addition to the horticultural displays, the complex features a dedicated theatre staging daily traditional Thai dance, music, and martial arts demonstrations. Located just off Sukhumvit Road, the garden functions well as a half-day or full-day trip for families, keen gardeners, and travellers visiting the wider Chon Buri coast.

The French Garden is the park's central showpiece, presenting symmetrical topiary, geometric hedges, and classical European statuary modelled on the grounds of Versailles, framed by towering palms and traditional Thai pavilions. Adjacent to this sits Dinosaur Valley, where hundreds of life-sized, anatomically detailed concrete dinosaur models are set among cycads and rocky hillsides.

Horticultural highlights include the Orchid and Bromeliad displays, where sheltered pavilions house thousands of colourful hybrid blooms alongside pitcher plants and hanging ferns. Nearby, the Cactus and Succulent Garden features terraced outdoor mounds and greenhouse domes filled with mature barrel cacti, agaves, and arid species from Africa and the Americas. For botanists, the Cycad Garden is particularly significant, functioning as an internationally recognised gene bank preserving rare and endangered cycads from across the globe. Quirky additions, such as a full-sized Stonehenge replica and an Italian terrace garden, round out the grounds.

Getting There and Logistics

The botanical garden is situated along Sukhumvit Road in Na Chom Thian, roughly 20 kilometres south of central Pattaya and 15 kilometres north of Sattahip.

App-based ride-hailing via Grab or Bolt provides the most straightforward transport from central Pattaya, typically charging between 350 THB and 500 THB (£8 to £11.50) each way. Alternatively, local taxis can be hired for a return day trip with driver waiting time included, usually negotiated between 1,000 THB and 1,200 THB (£23 to £28). White songthaews travelling south toward Sattahip run along Sukhumvit Road from South Pattaya for 30 THB to 50 THB (£0.70 to £1.15). These drop passengers at the roadside turn-off on the highway, requiring a brief local motorcycle taxi ride or a walk to reach the ticketing complex.

Standard foreign adult admission at the gate costs 500 THB (£11.50) for garden-only entry, with packages including the cultural performances priced at 800 THB (£18.50). Open-sided sightseeing trams run throughout the expansive grounds for an additional 200 THB (£4.60) per adult (150 THB for children), providing hop-on transport that significantly reduces walking in high temperatures.
