Located roughly 60 kilometres west of Hua Hin within Kaeng Krachan National Park, Pala-U Waterfall features a multi-tiered cascade set in dense evergreen forest, noted for its abundant butterfly populations and freshwater plunge pools.

Pala-U Waterfall sits in the southern section of Kaeng Krachan National Park, close to the Tenasserim mountain ridge along the border with Myanmar. Fed by the Huai Pala-U stream, the water flows down 15 rocky tiers through dense primary rainforest that supports rich birdlife, gibbons, and butterflies. Most visitors spend two to four hours exploring the accessible sections, cooling off in natural rock pools, and watching wildlife. The lower pools contain large schools of brook carp (mahseer), which swim right up to the water's edge.

The trail provides an active day trip into the rainforest for birdwatchers, photographers, and energetic walkers staying in Hua Hin. While the lowest tiers are reached via relatively straightforward forest paths, continuing higher involves navigating uneven boulders, exposed roots, and wet rock faces. As a result, exploring the upper tiers demands reasonable physical fitness, sturdy footwear, and sure footing, and is poorly suited to anyone with restricted mobility.

The waterfall comprises a series of up to 15 tiers ascending into the dense forest, though casual visitor access is restricted beyond the lower sections. Tiers 1 to 3 are the most straightforward to reach, connected by an established woodland path. Tier 1 features a footbridge over the stream, while Tiers 2 and 3 open out into wide, deep freshwater pools where you can swim alongside schools of indigenous Soro brook carp.

The terrain becomes substantially rougher above Tier 3. Continuing to Tiers 4 and 5 involves clambering over slick granite boulders and using fixed guide ropes strung along tree trunks to haul yourself up steep rock faces. These middle tiers see fewer visitors and feature narrower, taller cascades. Tiers 6 to 15 are largely wild and unmarked; national park rules prohibit casual access beyond Tier 5 without an authorised ranger guide.

Pala-U is also notable for its insect life. Sunny riverbanks along the lower tiers and clearings near the park checkpoint support dense butterfly populations. Butterflies gather in large numbers during the morning hours from 07:00 to 10:00, particularly between April and July when warmer weather and rising humidity bring out dozens of distinct species.

Getting There and Logistics

Pala-U Waterfall sits in the Huai Sat Yai subdistrict, approximately 60 kilometres west of central Hua Hin. The journey takes around 75 minutes by car, following Route 3218 before joining Rural Road 3219 into the forested foothills.

Because public transport does not serve the national park checkpoint, visitors generally hire a private taxi or Grab driver for a return trip from Hua Hin. A round trip with waiting time usually costs between 1,500 THB and 2,000 THB (£33 to £45). Renting a car or scooter is another straightforward option. Motorists should drive carefully along Route 3219, where wild elephants regularly emerge from the surrounding jungle to cross the road during the late afternoon.

At the time of research, the waterfall is open daily from 08:30 to 16:30, with park rangers turning walkers back from the upper trail sections after 15:00 so everyone returns before dark. Entry fees for foreign visitors stand at 300 THB (£6.70) for adults and 150 THB (£3.35) for children aged 3 to 14, payable in cash at the entrance station. Vehicle parking incurs an additional charge of 30 THB (£0.70) for cars and 20 THB (£0.45) for motorcycles. Sturdy trainers or hiking sandals with reliable tread are necessary, as river stones stay perpetually damp and slick underfoot.
